La cazuela del gaucho, Patagonia, Chile

We were on la Tierra del Fuego, on the Chilean part, looking for a place to sleep on our way between Ushuaia and Punta Arenas. It was incredibly windy and a little bit cold and rainy… On this part of the world, hostels and campings are not common things you can find at every corner… In fact, there are no corners, only straight roads crossing the impressive plains of the end of the world.

While we were driving toward the Rey Penguins colony, we found this unexpected estancia, warm and elegant refuge in the middle of nowhere.

For the evening meal, we had few options (unfortunately it was too late for the grilled lamb!) and this one, la cazuela del gaucho, was delicious. I don’t know the exact recipe but it was based on lamb and smoked mussels cooked in a broth with potatoes, carrots and kale.

Delicious souvenir of this night in Patagonia.
